Nationals activate Strasburg to start versus Phillies

The Washington Nationals activated right-hander Stephen Strasburg from the 10-day disabled list to start Wednesday's game against the Philadelphia Phillies, the club announced.

Strasburg was placed on the DL with a cervical nerve impingement on July 26. The 30-year-old also has been bothered by a shoulder ailment this season.

This was Strasburg's second DL stint of the season and he has made just one start -- on July 20 against the Atlanta Braves -- over the past 10-plus weeks. In that outing, he allowed six runs on eight hits while throwing 98 pitches in 4 2/3 innings.

Washington manager Dave Martinez said there wasn't a specific pitch count set for Strasburg's return.

"We'll see how the game goes," Martinez told reporters. "We'll see where he's at with high-leverage situations and stuff like that. If he's up there in pitches, we've got to be careful, but he feels good and he says he's ready."

Strasburg is 6-7 with a 3.90 ERA in 14 starts this season. He has struck out 101 in 85 1/3 innings.

Strasburg is 90-52 with a 3.13 ERA in 198 career starts over parts of nine major league seasons.

Washington optioned infielder Adrian Sanchez to Triple-A Syracuse in a corresponding move. Sanchez is 4-for-23 with no homers and one RBI in 15 games for the Nationals and has batted .247 with five homers and 27 RBIs in 64 contests with Syracuse.
