Indians place Donaldson (calf) on DL

The Cleveland Indians placed recently acquired third baseman Josh Donaldson on the disabled list Monday as he continues his recovery from a calf injury.

The 2015 American League MVP was acquired from the Toronto Blue Jays on Aug. 31 but hasn't played in a major league game since straining his left calf on May 28.

Donaldson is slated to play third base for Triple-A Columbus on Monday. He took batting practice and ran the bases on Sunday in Cleveland, but the team felt he needed more time to strengthen the calf.

Donaldson made two rehab appearances for high Class-A Dunedin prior to the trade. He went 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI on Tuesday, then 1-for-3 with a solo homer on Thursday.

The three-time All-Star played in just 36 games for the Blue Jays this season, hitting .234 with five home runs and 16 RBIs. He is making $23 million this year and becomes a free agent in the offseason.
