UNDP and ILGA World Launch International Pride Awards to Honor LGBTIQ+ Equality Champions
The awards for 2024 will include categories such as Movement Building in the Face of Hostility, Celebrating Diverse Lives, Emerging Leader, Lifelong Pursuit of Equality, and Extraordinary Ally.
In a significant step towards promoting diversity and inclusion, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and ILGA World have joined forces to introduce the International Pride Awards. This pioneering initiative aims to acknowledge and celebrate the exceptional contributions of individuals advocating for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and queer (LGBTIQ+) equality on a global scale.
Despite international obligations to promote and protect the human rights of all individuals without discrimination, millions of LGBTIQ+ individuals continue to face various forms of prejudice, marginalization, and violence solely based on their identity. Shockingly, in 62 countries, consensual same-sex sexual acts between adults are still criminalized, with severe penalties, including the death penalty, imposed in some cases. Moreover, constitutional protections against discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression remain limited across the globe.
Nevertheless, there are countless courageous advocates for equality who are tirelessly working to effect positive change, often in perilous circumstances. The International Pride Awards aim to spotlight their invaluable efforts, share their inspiring stories, and encourage more people to champion equality.
Nominations for the inaugural International Pride Awards will be open throughout June, inviting members of the public to nominate individuals whose unwavering dedication has significantly advanced the inclusion and equality of the LGBTIQ+ community.
The awards for 2024 will include categories such as Movement Building in the Face of Hostility, Celebrating Diverse Lives, Emerging Leader, Lifelong Pursuit of Equality, and Extraordinary Ally.
The winners of this year's awards will be announced at a special event on November 13, 2024, in Cape Town, South Africa, as part of the 31st ILGA World Conference. This ceremony will bring together global leaders, activists, and advocates to honor the resilience and accomplishments of LGBTIQ+ equality champions from diverse backgrounds and regions. A panel of 11 highly experienced LGBTIQ+ campaigners, advocates, academics, and civil society leaders will select the awardees.
Mandeep Dhaliwal, Director of the HIV and Health Group at UNDP, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating, "At a time when we are witnessing a backlash against LGBTIQ+ people and human rights in many countries, it is crucial to recognize and celebrate individuals who have dedicated themselves to creating a more inclusive and just world for all."
The International Pride Awards offer a unique platform to spotlight the often-overlooked contributions of LGBTIQ+ activists and allies. Julia Ehrt, Executive Director of ILGA World, emphasized the importance of honoring these individuals and reaffirming the commitment to building a future where everyone can live in equality and freedom, free from discrimination.
As the world observes Pride Month in June, the International Pride Awards serve as a poignant reminder of the ongoing work required to foster a more inclusive and equitable society. Let us unite in acknowledging and celebrating the resilience, courage, and achievements of LGBTIQ+ equality heroes worldwide. You
