Within just 18 hours of the Budget's release, Finance Minister Nicola Willis announced that over 240,821 visits were recorded on the government's tax calculator website. This platform outlines the precise amount of tax relief lower and middle-income New Zealanders can expect to receive.
Willis emphasized the importance of tax relief for hardworking Kiwis, especially those balancing multiple jobs and family responsibilities. She highlighted that many low and middle-income households have faced financial strain due to rising costs, having gone without tax relief for 14 years. As of July 31, the average income household is projected to receive up to $102 per fortnight to help alleviate cost-of-living pressures.
The Finance Minister noted that approximately 1.9 million households will benefit from tax relief for the first time since 2010, constituting 94% of all households in New Zealand.
The significant surge in traffic to the tax calculator website underscores the eagerness of Kiwis to understand how the Budget will impact them financially. Willis assured the public that the government's calculator provides accurate and up-to-date data from the Treasury, ensuring that users receive precise estimations of their tax benefits. This includes adjustments to tax brackets, enhancements to the in-work tax credit, and expansions to the independent earner tax credit.
Encouraging all New Zealanders to utilize the tax calculator, Willis reiterated the government's commitment to delivering tangible benefits through the Budget. She urged citizens to visit Budget.govt.nz/taxcalculator to calculate how they stand to benefit from the proposed tax adjustments starting July 31.
