Archegos Capital's Downfall: Founder Bill Hwang Convicted
Archegos Capital's founder, Bill Hwang, and his deputy, Patrick Halligan, were convicted in Manhattan federal court for fraud and market manipulation. The trial revealed massive financial losses and regulatory scrutiny due to their deceptive banking practices. While maximum sentences span 20 years for each charge, actual sentences may be lower.
Archegos Capital Management founder Sung Kook 'Bill' Hwang was convicted of fraud and other charges by a jury in Manhattan federal court on Wednesday. Prosecutors accused Hwang of market manipulation ahead of the 2021 collapse of his $36 billion private investment firm.
The jury, which began deliberations on Tuesday, found Hwang guilty on 10 of 11 criminal counts and Patrick Halligan, his Archegos deputy and co-defendant, guilty on all three counts he faced. The Archegos meltdown sent shock waves across Wall Street and drew regulatory scrutiny on three continents.
Prosecutors said Hwang and Halligan lied to banks to obtain billions of dollars to artificially inflate stock prices. They now face maximum sentences of 20 years in prison on each charge, although actual sentences may be lower. The trial, which began in May, centered on the implosion of Archegos, causing significant losses to banks, market participants, and employees.
