The College of Fisheries Tripura, affiliated with Central Agriculture University Imphal, is spearheading a research initiative to replace antibiotics with scientifically developed medicated fish fodder. Dean Professor Arun Bhai Patel informed ANI that their research encompasses various studies, including this transformative approach. Additionally, the institution has cataloged northeastern fish species in their fish museum.
Presenting 303 varieties of fish from all eight districts of the region, the museum highlights the college's exhaustive efforts. Recently, during National Fish Farmers Day, the college conducted a workshop on 'blue transformation.' Diverse stakeholders, including fish farmers, financiers, and entrepreneurs, deliberated on challenges and solutions to uplift the aquaculture sector.
Professor Patel emphasized the importance of scientific fish culture, noting the high feed costs in Tripura. The college is working on initiatives to promote food abundance by encouraging farmers to grow alternative crops for feed. They are also introducing new fish varieties and better quality seed preparation techniques to boost profitability.
Further, the college is researching alternative traditional feeds, finding crops like Colocasia and Tapioca as potential substitutes. In a significant breakthrough, they have developed a quicker and more hygienic technique for preparing Shidol (fermented fish). Efforts are also underway to cultivate Pengua fish on a larger scale. This event saw the attendance of key figures, including Professor Ranjit Sharma, NABARD's General Manager, and others.
