Assam Floods: 84 Dead, Thousands Affected, and Wildlife Devastated

Recent floods in Assam have claimed 84 lives, while impacting 14.39 lakh people across 27 districts. Nearly 2590 villages are submerged, with 1.57 lakh people in relief camps. Kaziranga National Park reports 159 animal deaths. Rescue efforts are ongoing.

In the past 24 hours, an additional five fatalities were reported in Assam's flood-affected regions, bringing the total death toll to 84, according to the Disaster Reporting and Information Management System Assam. The deluge has impacted approximately 14.39 lakh individuals across 27 districts.

Floodwaters have submerged 2580 villages across 86 revenue circles. Currently, 1.57 lakh people remain in 365 relief camps and distribution centers. The Brahmaputra River continues to flow above the danger mark at Neamatighat, Tezpur, Guwahati, and Dhubri.

Kaziranga National Park authorities have reported the deaths of 159 wild animals, including nine rhinos, due to the floods. Field Director Sonali Ghosh confirmed that the fatalities include 128 hog deer, nine rhinos, two swamp deer, and two sambar, primarily due to drowning.

Additionally, 12 hog deer, one swamp deer, a rhesus macaque, and an otter-pup perished while under care. Two more hog deer were killed by vehicle collisions, and an otter pup died due to other reasons. Rescue operations have successfully saved 133 animals, 111 of which were released after treatment.

Seven rescued animals, including two rhino calves and two elephant calves, are currently receiving treatment. While the flood situation in Kaziranga is improving marginally, 62 forest camps remain underwater, and four have been evacuated. Kaziranga National Park spans 430 sq km and is home to over 2600 one-horned rhinoceroses.

Rescue teams from NDRF, SDRF, Fire & Emergency Services, and local administration continue to assist those affected in the flood-hit areas. (ANI)
