In a major boost to the fisheries sector, Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh is set to inaugurate over 125 projects at the Fisheries Summer Meet in Madurai, Tamil Nadu on Friday, as per ministry officials.

These diverse initiatives, sanctioned under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), account for a cumulative investment surpassing Rs 100 crore.

Among the projects are fish retail kiosks, shrimp hatcheries, brood banks, ornamental fish units, biofloc units, fish feed mills, and fish value-added enterprises, according to the officials. While specific financial details were undisclosed, the PMMSY scheme aims to significantly support local businesses and enhance national fisheries production.

The event will also witness Singh distributing grants to the 12 winners of the inaugural Fisheries Startup Grand Challenge, organized by the ministry. Additionally, the minister will engage with beneficiaries who have received central funding.

The Fisheries Summer Meet offers a stage for interaction between the Centre and states, highlighting the contributions of stakeholders in the fisheries and aquaculture sectors. It aims to raise awareness about various central government initiatives. Union Ministers of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, S P Singh Baghel and George Kurian, along with Tamil Nadu Fisheries Minister Anitha R Radhakrishnan, are also slated to attend.
