CBI Arrests Key Suspect in NEET Paper Leak Scandal

The Central Bureau of Investigation has arrested Rakesh Ranjan in connection with the NEET paper leak case, marking a significant step in the probe. The operation involved raids in Patna and Kolkata, aiming to dismantle the network behind the leak.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested accused Rakesh Ranjan, also known as Rocky, from Bihar's Nalanda in connection with the NEET paper leak case. The agency announced on Thursday that Ranjan's arrest signifies a major breakthrough in the ongoing investigation.

Rakesh Ranjan, believed to be a crucial player in the NEET paper leak network, was apprehended following a meticulously planned operation by the CBI. "Before his arrest, the CBI set a trap and conducted raids at four locations near Patna and in Kolkata," a senior CBI official informed ANI.

This development follows a series of coordinated raids at multiple locations, including Patna and Kolkata, intended to dismantle the extensive network of individuals involved in the scandal. Ranjan's arrest is seen as pivotal in uncovering the full scope of the malpractice that has compromised the integrity of one of India's most critical entrance examinations, the agency added.

So far, the CBI's investigation has led to the arrest of over a dozen suspects, each allegedly participating in the leak and distribution of the NEET exam papers. Advanced investigative techniques have been employed by the CBI to track down and apprehend those involved.

"Ranjan was located and identified through a detailed analysis of digital footprints, including IP addresses and email communications, showcasing the agency's commitment to using advanced technology in its fight against corruption and fraud," the official noted. The CBI continues to follow leads and gather evidence as the investigation progresses.

The NEET-UG exam, held on May 5, 2024, has been surrounded by controversy, with accusations of cheating and impersonation. The National Testing Agency (NTA), responsible for conducting the exam, has faced severe backlash, leading to protests and legal actions. The Union Health Ministry has postponed the NEET-PG 2024 examination, with new dates yet to be announced.

In response to the scandal, the government has replaced the chief of the NTA and formed a committee to review and enhance its operations. The NEET-UG examination, governed by the NTA, serves as the gateway for admissions into MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, and other related courses in both government and private institutions across India.

Approximately 24 lakh candidates appeared for the NEET-UG, 2024, held across 4,750 centers on May 5, as reported by ANI.
