JNU Considers Dropping UGC NET for PhD Admissions Amid Integrity Concerns

Jawaharlal Nehru University is considering replacing the UGC NET exam with its own entrance test for PhD admissions, following the cancellation of the UGC NET exam due to integrity issues. The administration has sought feedback from faculty and stakeholders, targeting implementation in the 2025-2026 academic year.

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) is contemplating phasing out the UGC-NET exam for PhD admissions in favor of an in-house entrance test. This decision follows the UGC-NET cancellation due to integrity concerns. The university administration has requested consent from deans and heads of various departments to proceed with the change.

As per an email accessed by ANI, faculty members are required to submit their feedback by August 5. Vice Chancellor Santishree D Pandit conveyed in a phone interview that this decision will involve the combined input of all stakeholders. The email also mentioned that JNU will not receive funding from the University Grants Commission and Ministry of Education for holding the All India Entrance Examination for PhD programs.

Faculty members are to provide a comprehensive process outline including timelines, exam patterns, financial considerations, and estimated costs. The university's Teachers Association supports this move, highlighting that they had raised concerns about the UGC-NET exam's flaws. The National Testing Agency, which conducted the exam for years, has faced scrutiny after the Ministry of Home Affairs flagged potential compromises in exam integrity.
