U.S. Uncovers Russian Plot to Assassinate Rheinmetall CEO

U.S. intelligence revealed a Russian plot to assassinate Armin Papperger, CEO of German arms manufacturer Rheinmetall, which supports Ukraine's war effort. The plan was discovered earlier this year, prompting German security services to protect Papperger. Rheinmetall has increased production of military supplies for Ukraine since Russia's 2022 invasion.

U.S. intelligence has discovered a Russian plan to assassinate Armin Papperger, CEO of German arms manufacturer Rheinmetall, outlets including CNN and the New York Times reported on Thursday. The plot, which targeted executives supporting Ukraine’s defense, was uncovered earlier this year, according to U.S. and Western officials.

The U.S. informed Germany about the plot, enabling German security services to protect Papperger. During a NATO summit in Washington, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz declined to comment on the specific report but acknowledged the government's awareness of numerous threats.

Rheinmetall, which produces artillery shells and military vehicles for Ukraine, stated that it regularly consults with security authorities to take necessary measures. German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock and NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg highlighted the need for Europe to remain vigilant against Russian threats.
