The Rs 9,265-crore North East Gas Grid (NEGG) project is anticipated to reach completion in Tripura by March next year, an official revealed on Friday.
The NEGG project, aimed at synchronizing gas supply across the region, will lay 253 km of pipelines in seven northeastern state districts.
State Industries and Commerce Department Director Vishwasree B told PTI, ''The project in seven districts of Tripura is being driven by Indradhanus Gas Grid Ltd (IGGL), a joint venture that includes GAIL, IOCL, OIL, NRL, and ONGC.''
So far, 105 km of the targeted 253 km of pipelines have been laid, with the remaining sections in various stages of completion - from land acquisition to pipeline welding and laying. Completion is expected by March 2025, she added. ''Land acquisition payments have faced delays due to lack of authenticated ownership documents. However, district magistrates have addressed the issue and payments are underway,'' said Vishwasree.
Once operational, NEGG will facilitate consistent gas supply at the required pressure levels for industrial and power generation use.
The state government has also issued a license to ONGC for oil and gas exploration across five blocks. ''If gas reserves are found, ONGC will seek state permission for mining,'' she noted.
Tripura is estimated to hold 8 billion cubic meters of gas reserves.
