Government sources on Saturday clarified that amendments have only been made to the Transaction of Business Rules in the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization Act, 2019. The changes, they stated, are clarificatory in nature, stemming from existing provisions of the act.
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) amended the rules, expanding some powers of the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir. Former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah criticized the move, suggesting it indicates imminent elections and underscoring the need for a clear timeline for restoration of full statehood.
President Droupadi Murmu has approved these amendments. The amendments include changes in the Transaction of Business rules concerning matters such as finance, public order, and legal affairs, with proposals now requiring clearance through the Lieutenant Governor and Chief Secretary.
