Controversy has erupted in Assam following the government's decision to repeal the Assam Muslim Marriages and Divorce Registration Act of 1935. AIUDF General Secretary Rafiqul Islam criticized Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, arguing that the Act had been in place since 1935 without any constitutional conflicts.
Islam suggested that the government's decision aims to create difficulties for Muslims, who traditionally manage marriage and divorce under personal laws. He accused the government of providing vague reasons, such as provisions for child marriage, to justify the repeal.
Chief Minister Sarma defended the move, stating it was designed to prevent child marriage and ensure parity in marriage and divorce registration. He announced the Assam Repealing Bill 2024 would be placed before the next monsoon session of the Assam Legislative Assembly. Sarma also voiced concerns regarding changing demographics and the issue of illegal immigrants marrying tribal girls.
