The Uttar Pradesh State Government has announced several measures to ensure the smooth conduct of the Kanwar Yatra, set to begin on July 22. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has mandated that food and beverage shops along Kanwar routes display the names and identities of their operators to maintain the sanctity of the pilgrims' faith. Additionally, action will be taken against those selling halal-certified products.
Muzaffarnagar Police had earlier urged eateries along the Kanwar route to voluntarily display the names of their owners and employees. DIG Saharanpur, Ajay Kumar Sahni, explained that previous issues regarding food pricing and availability of non-vegetarian items necessitated this move. However, the measures have faced sharp criticism from opposition parties, accusing the UP Government of targeting the Muslim community.
Former Samajwadi Party MP Dr. ST Hasan and UP state Congress chief Ajay Rai have called for the cancellation of the orders, citing concerns over communal rifts. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav labeled the order a 'social crime,' calling for court intervention. AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi condemned the order, likening it to apartheid and Nazi-era practices, and challenged Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to issue a written order if he has the courage.
Despite the controversy, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath continues to emphasize the preparations for the Kanwar Yatra, reviewing guidelines for water, power, and urban development to ensure peace and security during the event. The Urban Development Department has released instructions aimed at enhancing cleanliness, lighting, and drinking water arrangements.
