In an effort to maintain the sanctity of the Kanwar Yatra, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has mandated that all food and beverage shops along the pilgrimage routes in Uttar Pradesh display nameplates with the owner or operator's identity. The move, aimed at ensuring smooth conduct of the Yatra beginning on July 22, has received mixed reactions.
The directive, which also calls for action against shops selling halal-certified products, has sparked political debate. Bharatiya Janata Party leader Mohsin Raza endorsed the decision, emphasizing the government's commitment to public security, while Rashtriya Lok Dal's Trilok Tyagi criticized it for unnecessarily mixing religion and politics.
Opposition figures like Rashtriya Janata Dal's Manoj Jha and Janata Dal-United's KC Tyagi condemned the directive as an undue intrusion. Despite the controversy, authorities, including former Deputy CM Dinesh Sharma and Ayodhya seers, have welcomed the move as a step towards fostering mutual harmony and respect. The Uttarakhand Police Administration has issued similar guidelines for Haridwar.
