Finance Minister Proposes Increased STT Rates to Curb Retail Speculation
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman proposed increasing Securities Transaction Tax (STT) rates on futures and options trading to discourage retail investors' participation. This move follows concerns raised by the Economic Survey about speculative trading and its impact on household financial savings. The rise in retail participation is largely driven by the potential for quick profits despite substantial risks.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday announced a proposal to raise the Securities Transaction Tax (STT) rates on futures and options (F&O) trading. The aim is to discourage retail investors from participating in these high-risk financial instruments.
According to the Union Budget speech, the STT on the sale of an option in securities will increase from 0.0625 percent to 0.1 percent of the option premium. Similarly, the STT on the sale of futures in securities will rise from 0.0125 percent to 0.02 percent of the transaction price.
The Economic Survey recently highlighted the growing interest of retail investors in derivative trading, attributing it to speculative motives. Both Finance Minister Sitharaman and SEBI Chief Madhabi Puri Buch have expressed concerns over the dangers of heavy F&O trading for inexperienced retail investors.
