P Chidambaram Criticizes Dual Tax Regimes, Calls for Single System

Senior Congress leader and former finance minister P Chidambaram has voiced strong criticism against the current dual income tax regimes, branding it a ''bad idea'' that will lead to tax arbitration and confusion.

Speaking at a press conference, Chidambaram argued that if a new tax regime is to be introduced, it should be announced well in advance and applied uniformly from a set date. He expressed concerns that the simultaneous existence of two tax regimes would only bewilder taxpayers and potentially complicate financial planning.

Chidambaram also questioned the incentives provided in the latest budget, asserting that the adjustments primarily benefit those in the 0-20 per cent tax bracket and do not significantly encourage a switch from the old system. He highlighted the general confusion surrounding long-term capital gains and indexation benefits, particularly in real estate.
