Inauguration of 500th Community Radio Station Marks Milestone at 10th National Community Radio Awards

Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Ashwini Vaishnaw, announced the winners of the 10th National Community Radio Awards on Thursday. The Minister also inaugurated India's 500th Community Radio Station, 'Apna Radio 90.0 FM,' operated by the Indian Institute of Mass Communication in Aizawl. He highlighted that this initiative will bring substantive change to the station's coverage area.
In attendance were Union Minister of State for I&B Dr. L. Murugan and Mizoram Chief Minister Shri Lalduhoma. The launch was celebrated as a significant milestone within the Government's 'Act East' policy. Vaishnaw also noted record allocations for the North East railway budget, aiming to improve connectivity in Mizoram.
Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma praised the station's potential to offer weather updates, agricultural information, and government schemes to the agrarian community. Union Minister of State Dr. L. Murugan emphasized the socially beneficial role of community radio stations, particularly during natural disasters. Secretary of Ministry of I&B Sanjay Jaju underscored the importance of these stations for marginalized communities.
Vice Chancellor of IIMC, Dr. Anupama Bhatnagar, mentioned that 'Apna Radio 90.0 FM' would unite communities and showcase local culture. The event also celebrated award winners in various categories, including thematic programming and community engagement, promoting local culture, and sustainability models. Top honors were awarded to Radio Mayur, Radio Kochi, and Radio Benziger among others.
