Shell Advances Hydrogen Revolution with 100-Megawatt Electrolyser in Germany

Shell announced a 100-megawatt renewable hydrogen electrolyser in Germany, scheduled to start operations in 2027. This project, part of Shell's Refhyne II initiative, aims to produce up to 44,000 kilograms of renewable hydrogen daily to reduce emissions. The company plans substantial investments to back low-carbon energy development.

Shell has unveiled plans to construct a 100-megawatt renewable hydrogen electrolyser in Germany, marking a significant step forward in its Refhyne II project. The announcement came Thursday as the company confirmed its final investment decision for the ambitious initiative.

The electrolyser is projected to begin operations in 2027, producing up to 44,000 kilograms of renewable hydrogen per day. The primary aim is to partially decarbonize site operations at Shell Rheinland, with Shell stating that this will contribute to reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions at the facility.

In the long term, Shell envisions the project playing a crucial role in lowering industrial emissions across the region, responding to evolving customer demands. With plans to invest between $10 billion to $15 billion from 2023 to 2025 in low-carbon energy, Shell's 2023 investment stands at $5.6 billion, with 23% allocated to capital spending.
