Vice President and Rajya Sabha Speaker Jagdeep Dhankhar emphasized Parliament’s paramount role in preserving the Constitution and safeguarding democracy on Saturday. Dhankhar, during a two-day orientation program for newly elected and nominated Members of Rajya Sabha at Parliament House, described MPs as the foremost guardians of democracy, especially during crises.
“Whatever happens inside the Parliament, no one can interfere in it except the Chair, neither the executive nor any other institution. Parliament is supreme for its procedure and for its proceedings. Any proceeding in the House or in Parliament is beyond review, either by the executive or any other authority,” Dhankhar stated. He further explicated Parliament’s dual role in creating and protecting the Constitution and democracy.
Dhankhar also lamented the current conduct of some members, noting, “There is pain when members seek opportunities for disruption. This weakens the legislature and affects the common man.” He criticized the misuse of indecent conduct as a political weapon, which he said erodes the dignity of democracy. Reflecting on India's democratic history, Dhankhar recalled the Emergency period as the darkest episode, highlighting Parliament's enduring commitment to the people.
