The Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) celebrated its 18th Foundation Day at its Prithvi Bhavan headquarters on Saturday, marking nearly two decades of significant contributions to Earth system sciences, according to a release. Founded on July 27, 2006, MoES has been at the forefront of scientific research and services. The Ministry's achievements encompass all spheres of earth system sciences: air, water, land, solid earth, life, and their interactions, reflecting its commitment to scientific and technological progress.
The celebrations began with an inaugural ceremony attended by senior government officials, scientists, staff, and key stakeholders. Professor Ajay Kumar Sood, Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India, was the Chief Guest. Dr. M Ravichandran, Secretary, MoES, welcomed the attendees and congratulated his colleagues.
As we enter the 19th year of MoES, we take pride in our achievements and must address challenges ahead, especially in food, water, energy, health, and climate change. We must continue doing good science for societal benefit, he said. To commemorate the day, the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a subordinate office of MoES, released documents to aid disaster mitigation efforts. The National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR) also released a detailed report on the 14th Indian Arctic Expedition, and the Centre for Marine Living Resources and Ecology (CMLRE) released a catalogue on deep-sea taxonomy.
The first issue of the MoES Newsletter, highlighting news and updates from the Ministry, was released. A science talk by Dr. Estibaliz Gascon from ECMWF was also organized. Additional Secretary and Finance Adviser Vishwajit Sahay and Joint Secretary D Senthil Pandian presided over the event. Dr. Ravichandran emphasized MoES's mission to enhance the quality of life for all citizens through scientific advancements, with the event streamed live on MoES's YouTube channel.
MoES is mandated to provide services for weather, climate, ocean and coastal state, hydrology, seismology, and natural hazards, and to explore and harness marine resources sustainably. The Ministry aims to explore Earth's poles and develop ocean technology for societal applications, the release added. (ANI)
