Demand for Accountability in Delhi's Infrastructure Tragedies

Congress MP Manickam Tagore on Monday issued an adjournment motion notice in Lok Sabha, pushing for a debate on accountability regarding recent infrastructure tragedies in Delhi. Tagore's motion emphasized the urgent need to address the collapses and tragic losses, urging the house to prioritize this critical issue.

Leader of the opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, condemned the systemic failures leading to the deaths of three students. He cited the recent incident where students lost their lives due to flooding in a basement, attributing the tragedy to poor planning and negligence. Gandhi extended his condolences to the affected families and stressed the government's duty to ensure citizens' safety.

On July 27, three UPSC aspirants perished in a basement flood in West Delhi's Old Rajinder Nagar. Following this, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) sealed several properties and basements for by-law violations in the Karol Bagh Zone. The MCD's crackdown came amidst massive student protests demanding justice. Authorities highlighted that the basement, meant for parking and storage, violated fire safety conditions by being used as a study area. The ongoing probe resulted in the arrest of the coaching centre's owner and coordinator, who are now in judicial custody.
