Devastating Landslides in Wayanad Claim 44 Lives, Rescue Operations in Full Swing
A series of massive landslides in Meppadi, Wayanad have resulted in 44 deaths and 250 rescues, prompting large-scale relief efforts by multiple agencies including the NDRF, Indian Army, and Navy. The Kerala government is actively coordinating the operations to provide immediate assistance to affected residents.

At least 44 people have died, and 250 individuals have been rescued and relocated to temporary relief camps following a series of massive landslides in Meppadi, Wayanad district early on July 30. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) deployed one team to the site on Tuesday, with three additional teams en route, according to NDRF Director General Piyush Anand.
Kerala Minister MB Rajesh announced that rescue operations are being undertaken on a war footing. With 44 confirmed deaths, the gravity of the disaster is feared to be worse. Various agencies, including the Army, are engaged in the operations. The Chief Minister is closely monitoring the situation, sending ministers to Wayanad and stationing an IAS officer for coordination. Airlifting efforts are underway for stranded individuals, and 250 people have been moved to shelter camps.
Health Minister Veena George noted that NDRF and Civil Defence teams are already present, with a Navy team on the way. So far, 24 bodies have been recovered, and 70 injured individuals are receiving treatment. Additionally, a bridge in the area has been washed away. A Naval team from Azhimala and the Navy's River Crossing team are assisting in rescue efforts in the Meppadi, Mundakkal town, and Chooralmala areas.
The Ministry of Defence reported that two Indian Army rescue columns and medical teams have been deployed following a request from the Kerala Government. Two Air Force helicopters have also been dispatched despite adverse weather conditions. A control room has been established to assist with immediate relief and rescue efforts.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan directed coordinated efforts for prompt rescue operations, confirming that the entire government machinery is actively involved with ministers overseeing the operations.
