Over 10,000 Vacancies in BSF Revealed in Rajya Sabha

Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai disclosed that 10,145 posts are vacant in the BSF as of July 1, with provisions for ex-Agniveers in recruitment. The BSF has created 7,372 new posts in the last five years and recruited 54,760 personnel.

In a recent Rajya Sabha session, Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai revealed that the Border Security Force (BSF) has 10,145 vacant positions as of July 1. Among these, 387 are Gazetted Officers (Group 'A'), 1,816 are Subordinate Officers (Group 'B'), and 7,942 are Other Ranks (Group 'C').

Rai responded to inquiries from CPI MP Sandosh P and CPI (M) MP AA Rahim, detailing the vacancies within the BSF, which oversees 3,323 km of the India-Pakistan border and 4,096 km of the India-Bangladesh border. Between 2020 and 2024, the BSF created 7,372 new positions.

He provided an annual breakdown, noting 7,210 positions were created in 2024, 54 in 2023, and 108 in 2021, with no new positions in 2020 and 2022. Additionally, 54,760 personnel were recruited in the last five years. The BSF's current strength stands at 255,663 against a sanctioned strength of 265,808.

The government has introduced special provisions for the recruitment of ex-Agniveers, reserving 10% of vacancies for them and offering age relaxations. Physical Efficiency Test exemptions and a Welfare and Rehabilitation Board for retired personnel and their families have also been established.
