Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has appealed to Union Home Minister Amit Shah to classify the recent Wayanad landslide as a 'calamity of severe nature' under the Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS) guidelines. This would enable Members of Parliament to provide immediate assistance to the areas hit by the disaster.

The twin landslides struck Mundakkai and Chooralmala in the early hours of July 30, causing massive destruction. Rescue operations have been ramped up, with political leaders discussing ways to mobilize financial support for the region's recovery.

In a letter shared on social media, Tharoor emphasized the need for coordinated support. He cited Paragraph 8.1 of the MPLADS Guidelines, asking for a declaration that would allow MPs to recommend up to Rs 1 crore for relief efforts. Tharoor highlighted the urgency of responding generously to aid the rescue, relief, and rehabilitation initiatives in Wayanad.
