Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Sudip Bandyopadhyay on Friday called on the government to withdraw the 18 per cent GST on life and medical insurance premiums, dubbing it as anti-people.
The plea came in the wake of senior BJP leader Nitin Gadkari's similar request to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. Bandyopadhyay voiced his concerns during the Question Hour in the Lok Sabha, supported by members of the opposition INDIA bloc parties.
West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC chief Mamata Banerjee also demanded the withdrawal, warning of agitation if ignored by the government. She emphasized that the tax adversely affects people's ability to meet their basic health needs.
