Overcrowded Asha Kiran Shelter Under Scrutiny After Multiple Deaths

The Asha Kiran shelter in Rohini, intended for individuals with intellectual disabilities, is housing almost double its capacity, resulting in severe health and hygiene issues. Following a report of 14 recent deaths, NCW Chairperson Rekha Sharma led a fact-finding mission which highlighted contaminated food and water, overcrowding, and malnutrition.

A fact-finding committee from the National Commission for Women (NCW) has revealed alarming conditions at the Asha Kiran shelter in Rohini. The shelter, designed to house 255 women, is currently holding 493 inmates.

Following reports of 14 recent deaths, including eight women, NCW Chairperson Rekha Sharma led an investigative team to the facility. They cited overcrowding, poor hygiene, and contaminated food and water as primary concerns.

The NCW has vowed to work with the Delhi government to bring the shelter up to acceptable standards and hold those responsible for these conditions accountable.
