A retired Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of Punjab Police shot and killed his son-in-law in the Chandigarh District Court on Saturday. The tragic incident took place amid ongoing divorce meetings between the two families, officials confirmed.

The deceased has been identified as Harpreet Singh, while the accused is Malvinder Singh, a retired Punjab Police official. Chandigarh Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kanwardeep Kaur stated, 'We received information about firing at the Mediation Centre of the District Court at around 2 pm today. Police reached the spot and found that the victim's name is Harpreet Singh. He was taken to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries. The alleged accused was apprehended at the scene and taken into custody.'

The SSP further added that forensic teams were on the scene and investigations are ongoing. 'We have recovered a .32 bore pistol, four fired bullets, and three unused bullets. The alleged accused entered the court through one of the gates which is being investigated. Today was the fourth meeting at the Mediation Centre for divorce proceedings between the two families.'
