Opposition Slams Government Over Proposed Waqf Board Reforms

Opposition leaders have voiced strong criticism against the central government's proposed amendments to the Waqf Board Act, which aim to curb the board's powers over its assets. CPI General Secretary D Raja accused the BJP of attempting to seize Waqf properties and tampering with the constitution.

Raja stated, "The proposed amendments have created significant apprehensions among minorities, especially Muslims. People foresee a sinister agenda of the BJP-RSS to end Waqf and confiscate its properties without proper public or parliamentary debate." He added that these measures threaten the secular and democratic fabric of society.

Congress MP Pramod Tiwari urged the government to discuss the bill with all stakeholders, including their allies. He emphasized, "Any new bill should be thoroughly debated with all concerned parties." Former Waqf Minister Mohammed Arif Naseem Khan echoed these concerns, alleging that the government plans to distribute Waqf properties to its allies.

According to sources, the government may introduce these amendments in the Rajya Sabha within the week, consulting Muslim intellectuals and organizations for suggestions. The budget session of Parliament concludes on August 12, with 32-40 amendments being considered. (ANI)
