Nation in Shock: Vinesh Phogat's Disqualification from Paris Olympics Raises Questions

Congress leader Deepender Singh Hooda has voiced concerns about Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification from the Paris Olympics. He questioned whether the Indian Olympic Association has raised the issue with international bodies. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his support for the athlete and called for further investigation.

Following the disqualification of celebrated wrestler Vinesh Phogat from the Paris Olympics, Congress leader Deepender Singh Hooda on Tuesday voiced his concerns. Hooda questioned why Phogat, despite her hard work and dedication, fell short during an event where athletes worldwide trained rigorously. He urged the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to clarify the matter with the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Reacting to the shocking disqualification, Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya revealed that the IOA lodged a strong protest with United World Wrestling (UWW) regarding Phogat being deemed 'overweight' for the 50 kg category. Mandaviya and other government officials have assured that multiple steps were taken to bolster Phogat's preparation, further intensifying the need for answers.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached out to Indian Olympic Association President PT Usha for insights and potential actions. Modi voiced his support for Phogat, describing her as a national pride and urging her to stay resilient. Despite this setback, India has future medal chances to look forward to in athletics and other events at the Paris Olympics.
