Congress leaders have lavished praise on javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra following his silver medal achievement at the ongoing Paris Olympics 2024 on Friday. Congress MP Manickam Tagore expressed that Chopra has brought glory to India once again.
'It's happy news from Paris that Neeraj Chopra has added more glory to India, and his mother's reaction to his win shows the sportsmanship in both the mother and the star,' Tagore said. Congress MP Pramod Tiwari also congratulated Chopra, noting that the athlete has made the nation proud by securing a medal for the second time and surpassing his Tokyo record.
On Friday, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi similarly praised Neeraj Chopra for his stellar performance. 'Neeraj, you're an amazing athlete. Congratulations on your silver medal after a spectacular performance at ParisOlympics2024. You have made India immensely proud yet again,' Gandhi wrote on X.
Despite failing to retain his gold, Chopra delivered a notable performance with a best throw of 89.45 meters. His second attempt was his highest scoring throw, but he faced setbacks with four consecutive foul throws, diminishing his chances for gold.
Neeraj Chopra has become the second Indian male athlete to win two Olympic medals in an individual event since independence. Although his qualification throw of 89.34 meters showed promise, he couldn't surpass his season best in the final. His 89.45-meter effort marked his second-best performance to date.
Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem clinched the gold with a record-breaking throw of 92.97 meters, surpassing the previous Olympic record set by Denmark's Andreas Thorkildsen in 2008. Grenada's Anderson Peters earned the bronze with an 88.54-meter throw.
