Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar called for a CBI investigation on Sunday into the rape and murder of a woman doctor at a Kolkata medical college. Initially, police had categorized the case as a suicide before reclassifying it as a murder.

'It is a very shameful incident. The inquiry should be conducted properly. We demand a CBI inquiry because the police first said that it was a case of suicide and then said that it was a murder case. The accused they have arrested is also a part of the police administration,' Majumdar stated.

The post-graduate trainee doctor was discovered raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, sparking widespread outrage and protests. The Federation of Resident Doctors Associations (FORDA) has announced a nationwide halt of elective services in hospitals on August 12 to support the RG Kar Medical College residents. Additionally, various medical colleges and hospitals have shown solidarity by suspending elective services.

Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abhishek Banerjee on August 10 proposed the introduction of an ordinance or bill for expedited rape trials, criticizing the political exploitation of the incident. In a show of solidarity, doctors at AIIMS Bhopal held a candlelight march, while those at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in Delhi demanded a CBI probe. Similarly, Congress workers in Kolkata organized a protest rally for justice. Earlier, BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul and West Bengal Legislative Assembly Opposition Leader Suvendu Adhikari had also called for a CBI investigation into the RG Kar Medical College incident.
