IMA Demands Justice for Murdered Doctor Amid Protests and Outrage

The Indian Medical Association is pressing for a thorough investigation into the brutal rape and murder of a 2nd-year PG student in Kolkata. Protests and candle marches by doctors across India underline the demand for safety in medical workplaces. Calls for a CBI probe and stricter laws grow louder.

Expressing profound shock over the brutal murder of a 2nd-year PG student at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has called for an impartial, thorough investigation and strict punishment for the culprits. IMA has also urged Union Minister JP Nadda to look into the conditions enabling such crimes and ensure the safety of doctors, especially women, in the workplace.

The IMA has given a two-day ultimatum for their demands. In a letter, they have requested a safe zone, defined security measures, and a Central Law to deter violence. Federation of Resident Doctors' Association President Aviral Mathur has also demanded an investigation by a central agency, and confirmed that the strike will continue.

The murder on August 9 has sparked widespread protests. Following a meeting with Union Minister JP Nadda, Dr. Mathur emphasized the need for a CBI investigation and compensation for the victim's family. He noted that while some demands were met with agreement, there was hesitancy on others. Meanwhile, Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh criticized the West Bengal government, calling it undemocratic with weak law and order.

Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar insisted on swift justice, condemning the police's attitude and pushing for a CBI probe. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad also demanded accountability from the Bengal government.

The police have summoned the Head of the Chest Department of RG Kar Medical College for questioning. CM Mamata Banerjee has promised swift action and mentioned a possible CBI handover if the case remains unsolved.

Doctors and medical students across India have organized candle marches and strikes, demanding a CBI inquiry, fast-track court, and stricter security measures in hospitals to prevent future incidents.
