Romanian Navy Neutralizes Black Sea Mine Amid Ongoing Threats

The Romanian navy successfully conducted a controlled explosion of a mine that drifted to its Black Sea shore. The joint taskforce involving Romania, Bulgaria, and Turkey aims to defuse mines that have floated into the Black Sea since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Over 100 mines have been neutralized so far.

On Tuesday, Romania's navy executed a controlled detonation of a mine that had drifted ashore along the Black Sea, as reported by the defense ministry. This operation is part of a combined effort by Romania, Bulgaria, and Turkey to deactivate stray mines, which have been floating in the Black Sea following Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

The defense ministry noted that local officials had alerted them early on Tuesday about an unidentified object found near Grindul Chituc in southeastern Romania, a region within the Danube Delta shared with Ukraine. Photographs identified the object as a YaRM-type anti-landing seamine, which was subsequently detonated at around 0950 GMT.

The Black Sea, vital for the transport of grain, oil, and oil products, is bordered by Bulgaria, Romania, Georgia, Turkey, Ukraine, and Russia. Since the onset of the conflict, over 100 drifting mines have been found and neutralized, according to the Romanian navy.
