NMC Urges Medical Colleges to Formulate Safety Policies Amid Rising Violence

The National Medical Commission has advised medical colleges to develop policies ensuring a safe work environment. This directive follows recent violence against doctors, highlighted by the sexual assault and murder of a female doctor in Kolkata. Union Health Minister JP Nadda has urged strict measures and welcomed a CBI investigation into the incident.

The National Medical Commission (NMC), under the guidance of Union Health Minister JP Nadda, has issued an advisory to all medical colleges to formulate a comprehensive policy for ensuring a safe work environment. This comes in response to increasing reports of violence against doctors in medical institutions.

The advisory specifies that safety measures should be implemented in OPD, wards, casualty, hostels, and other open areas, stressing the need for well-lit corridors and CCTV monitoring in sensitive areas. Adequate security staff, both male and female, should be posted in critical areas to ensure safety.

In the aftermath of a female doctor's sexual assault and murder at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, Nadda criticized the West Bengal government and supported the Calcutta High Court's decision for a CBI investigation. He emphasized that any incident of violence should be promptly investigated, with a report sent to the NMC within 48 hours.
