DR Congo Lifts Mining Suspension in South Kivu, Except for Gold

Democratic Republic of Congo has lifted the suspension on mining activities in South Kivu province, excluding gold extraction, according to a statement by the region's governor on Thursday.

The suspension, initially imposed in July to address disorder among mining operators, affected the extraction of gold, tin ore cassiterite, and the hi-tech mineral coltan, predominantly mined by artisanal miners.

Following discussions with mining operators, the suspension was lifted to transform the sector into a pillar for stability, economic development, and wealth creation in South Kivu. Further consultations with industry stakeholders will continue.
