CM Mamata Banerjee Demands Swift CBI Action in Junior Doctor's Murder Case

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has announced plans for a rally to demand that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) expedite its probe into the rape and murder of a junior doctor. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) provided detailed reasons for the rally, with TMC Rajya Sabha MP Derek O'Brien underscoring the urgency of the investigation.

Derek O'Brien stated that the same deadline, set by CM Banerjee for the Kolkata Police to complete their investigation by August 17, should apply to the CBI. In a post on X, O'Brien demanded daily updates from the CBI on the case. He stressed that justice would be served only when all culprits are apprehended and the case is referred to a fast-track court.

O'Brien also cautioned against the possibility of the case being quietly buried now that it has been transferred to the CBI. He emphasized the need for swift justice and severe punishment for all involved, including those who attacked the hospital. He noted that 19 individuals have already been arrested in connection with the violence at the hospital premises.

Public outrage over the crime is palpable, with O'Brien describing the murder and rape of the young doctor as both bestial and heinous. He expressed solidarity with the victim's family and underscored the necessity for justice.

Chief Minister Banerjee is set to march from Moulali to Dorina Crossing Esplanade, demanding that the CBI arrest all involved and forward the case to a fast-track court. Meanwhile, doctors and various medical organizations have announced protests nationwide in solidarity with the victim. The Kolkata Police have reported the arrest of 19 individuals involved in the August 14 hospital violence.

The incident, which took place on August 9, has led to widespread protests by the medical fraternity. A mob of 5,000 to 7,000 individuals attacked RG Kar Hospital, leading to nationwide strikes and protests.
