Tensions mounted around the West Bengal state secretariat on Tuesday as the Nabanna Abhijan Rally commenced in Howrah. Protestors, having gathered near Santragachi, initially reached the barricades. Originating from College Square, the demonstration saw participants raising slogans and carrying tricolours.

In response, the West Bengal Police deployed considerable forces, including vajra vehicles, water cannons, and the Riot Control Force, while civic workers greased check gates near Fort William's rear in Kolkata to deter barricade scaling. Containers were positioned to block major roads.

Governor CV Ananda Bose appealed to the state government to refrain from using force against the peaceful student protestors. Citing a Supreme Court verdict, he emphasized the importance of allowing democratic expression. This request follows the police's rejection of a rally application by 'Paschimbanga Chhatro Samaj,' citing insufficient information.

The rally's backdrop includes national outrage over the brutal rape and murder of a woman trainee doctor at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital, discovered on August 9. The incident has fueled numerous protests demanding justice.
