Air India Group commenced construction of a mega Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility at a ceremony in Bengaluru on Wednesday. Situated on a 35-acre plot at Bangalore International Airport, the facility will serve as a crucial hub for Air India's aircraft maintenance operations as the company updates its fleet and broadens its global reach.
The ceremony was graced by Gunjan Krishna, Commissioner for Industrial Development and Director of the Department of Industries & Commerce, Government of Karnataka, along with Hari Marar, Managing Director and CEO of Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), and Chin Yau Seng, CEO of SIA Engineering Company. Earlier this year, Air India signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Karnataka and partnered with SIA Engineering Company for the facility's development.
According to Gunjan Krishna, "It is heartening to see the quick turnaround that Air India has made in starting work for the MRO. This milestone not only benefits Indian aviation but also propels Karnataka to become a leading aviation hub." Campbell Wilson, CEO of Air India, emphasized the importance of the facility in strengthening India's aviation ecosystem and enhancing the airline's operational capabilities. Expected to generate over 1,200 jobs and support 200 SMEs, the MRO will feature state-of-the-art technology and expand Air India's maintenance capabilities, including a mega hangar and additional servicing hangars.
