President of India, Droupadi Murmu, is set to present the National Teachers' Award 2024 to 82 exceptional teachers in a ceremony at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, this Thursday. These awards aim to celebrate the invaluable contributions of educators who have significantly enhanced the quality of education and the lives of their students through their dedication.
Each award includes a certificate of merit, a cash prize of Rs. 50,000, and a silver medal. The awardees will also have the opportunity to interact with the Hon'ble Prime Minister. India commemorates September 5th, the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, as National Teachers' Day each year.
This year's honorees were chosen through a meticulous, transparent, and online selection process conducted at district, state, and national levels by the Department of School Education and Literacy. Fifty teachers were selected from 28 states, three Union Territories, and six organizations. The group includes 34 male teachers, 16 female teachers, two differently-abled educators, and one teacher working with CWSN. Additionally, 16 teachers from the Department of Higher Education and 16 from the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship will be honored.
The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 emphasizes the importance of motivated and capable faculty for student and institutional advancement. It also suggests rewards and recognition to foster a culture of excellence in the educational ecosystem. Consequently, in 2023, two new award categories for Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and Polytechnics were introduced under the National Teachers' Awards scheme, previously limited to school teachers. The 16 selected teachers for these new categories are from Polytechnics, State Universities, and Central Higher Education Institutions.
