Union Minister and BJP leader Sukanta Majumdar on Monday launched a fierce attack against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over the flood-like situation in the state. Majumdar claimed that the TMC government failed to undertake necessary repairs to maintain the dams.
Speaking to media, Majumdar questioned Banerjee's annual claims about the floods being man-made. He accused the state government of taking no initiatives to counter the problem and lamented the lack of repair work on dams. Majumdar dismissed state claims of insufficient funds from the central government, instead questioning the state’s own efforts.
Majumdar’s remarks followed a letter from Banerjee to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday, where she expressed concerns over the flooding in South Bengal. Banerjee attributed the issue to heavy water releases from the Damodar Valley Corporation reservoirs in Jharkhand, accusing the central government of unilateral decisions.
Addressing questions on the RG Kar Medical College & Hospital rape-murder case, Majumdar emphasized that a CBI investigation hinges on the availability of evidence. He noted that no agency can deliver justice without sufficient evidence. He also mentioned recent arrests in a corruption case, calling the investigation thorough.
The BJP conducted torch marches across West Bengal, accusing the TMC government of systematic failure in connection to the hospital tragedy, involving the rape and murder of a 33-year-old trainee doctor. The BJP's rallies in various districts demanded the resignation of CM Mamata Banerjee, alleging a cover-up by the state's administration.
