High Voter Turnout in Jammu and Kashmir's Second Phase Polling

Jammu and Kashmir recorded a 54.11% voter turnout in the second phase of polling, with notable participation in Budgam, Ganderbal, Poonch, Rajouri, Reasi, and Srinagar. Voters near the border were able to vote at special polling stations. The third phase is scheduled for October 1, 2024.

The Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir reported a voter turnout of 54.11 percent by 7 PM in the second phase of polling, according to the Election Commission of India (ECI). Specific district turnouts included Budgam at 58.97%, Ganderbal at 58.81%, Poonch at 71.59%, Rajouri at 68.22%, Reasi at 71.81%, and Srinagar at 27.37%, as shared by the ECI.

The ECI confirmed that voting transpired in a peaceful atmosphere devoid of fear and intimidation. Border residents were empowered to vote at 55 special polling stations near the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch and 51 in Rajouri. The Commission underscored its commitment to inclusive democracy, ensuring even remote areas participated.

By 7 PM, the overall voter turnout in the six districts matched and even surpassed figures from the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, with Phase-1 also reflecting a strong voter response of 61.38%. CEC Rajiv Kumar praised the historic significance of these elections, highlighting the transition from fear to democratic celebration, termed 'Jashn-e-Jamhuriyat'.

Robust security measures ensured a conducive environment for voters. The next voting phase is slated for October 1, 2024, with vote counting scheduled on October 8.
