Himachal's Apple Growers Face High Prices Amid Declining Yields

Apple growers in Himachal Pradesh are witnessing prosperous market prices this year, but the celebration is tinged with worry about changing horticultural practices and dwindling annual yields. Official data shows 2.25 crore apple boxes have reached markets, initially selling at Rs 3,000 to Rs 3,500 per 20-kg box.

Narendra Thakur, a local trader, noted that for farmers, this year's rates have been notably advantageous. 'During July and August, apple growers secured prices ranging from Rs 2,000 to Rs 3,000 per 20-kg box,' Thakur confirmed. Despite a brief price dip, farmers managed to sell boxes for Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,000. He highlighted that most transactions, about 2.15 crore, were conducted through Paytm cards, with significant sales both within Himachal Pradesh and externally.

Jagat Singh Negi, Himachal Pradesh's Horticulture Minister, emphasized the need for state and farmers to adapt to shifting weather conditions and reduced per-hectare production by integrating high-density plantation methods and advanced agricultural technologies. Despite contributing Rs 5,500 crore annually to the state's economy, this year's production faces a 40% decline, raising concerns about the long-term viability of apple farming.
