Junior Doctors End Hunger Strike After Meeting with Mamata Banerjee

The junior doctors protesting over the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case in Kolkata concluded their hunger strike after a meeting with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at the state secretariat, Nabanna, late Monday night. 'During our meeting with the Chief Minister, we had a fruitful discussion, and she assured us of directives to be issued by 3 pm tomorrow,' said Sayantani Ghosh Hazra, a junior doctor, speaking to ANI after the negotiations.

Seventeen junior doctors attended the live-broadcasted meeting with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. For days, the Chief Minister had been urging the protesting doctors to end their strike and engage in talks.

Following the cessation of their indefinite hunger strike, several doctors required immediate hospital care due to deteriorating health conditions. The medical community in West Bengal and nationwide has stood in solidarity, while political tensions rise with BJP demanding CM Banerjee's resignation. The trainee doctor's murder, discovered on August 9, has intensified public outrage.

The incident has not only provoked regional protests but also garnered national attention with the Indian Medical Association declaring that its Junior Doctors Network will fast in solidarity nationwide with the West Bengal Junior Doctors Front from October 15. (ANI)
