Island in the Dark: Puerto Rico's Massive Power Outage
Puerto Rico experienced a massive power outage, affecting around 90% of the island's population. The cause of the failure is unclear, although it started in the southern Guayanilla province. Power generation is limited, with only one backup plant operational, and no timeline for restoration has been given.
Puerto Rico plunged into darkness Tuesday morning as a substantial power grid failure left nearly all of the island without electricity.
At 9 a.m. local time, approximately 90% of Puerto Rico's population was without electricity, according to real-time data from energy distribution firm Luma Energy. The exact cause remains unclear, though reports suggest the issue originated in the Guayanilla province on the southern coast.
A Genera spokesperson indicated there is no timeline for power restoration. The company's website revealed only one backup plant producing energy for the U.S. territory.
