A 57-year-old woman from New Jersey tragically lost her life after being set on fire on a New York subway train. The accused, Sebastian Zapeta, has been indicted on charges of murder and arson. Authorities continue to investigate the attack's circumstances and the victim's identity.
New York City police have identified the woman who tragically died after being set on fire on a subway train as 57-year-old Debrina Kawam from New Jersey. Kawam was attacked on December 22 by Sebastian Zapeta, who has been charged with murder and arson.
Mayor Eric Adams expressed condolences to Kawam's family and reinforced the need for better care for people living on the subway. The horrific incident has put a spotlight on subway safety and raised concerns about social services for the homeless.
Prosecutors allege Zapeta set Kawam's clothing on fire on an F train at Coney Island, then watched as she perished. Zapeta, identified through surveillance footage, remains in custody without entering a plea. The investigation is ongoing.
