Cotton Output Decline: A Looming Challenge for 2024-25

The Cotton Association of India (CAI) forecasts a reduction in cotton output for the 2024-25 season, estimating a decrease to 301.75 lakh bales, primarily due to lower yields in Gujarat and the northern region. Despite the decline, cotton quality remains high. CAI also highlights import, export, and consumption data for the season.

The Cotton Association of India (CAI) announced on Friday that cotton output for the 2024-25 season, starting in October, is projected to fall to 301.75 lakh bales. This decline is attributed to decreased yields in Gujarat and northern regions, despite the maintained quality of the cotton produced.

In the previous 2023-24 season, output reached 327.45 lakh bales. CAI President Atul Ganatra noted that reports suggest lower yields in Gujarat, Punjab, and Haryana would impact overall production, although the quality of cotton remains very good.

Supply estimates up to January 2025 anticipate a total of 234.26 lakh bales, incorporating fresh pressings, imports, and opening stock. CAI projects domestic consumption at 315 lakh bales, with exports for 2024-25 estimated at 17 lakh bales, down from the previous season.
