Court Reserves Order on Sajjan Kumar's 1984 Riots Sentencing

The Rouse Avenue court has reserved its sentencing order on former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar's involvement in the 1984 Anti-Sikh Riots. Convicted for the murder of a father-son duo, Kumar's sentencing is set for February 25. The prosecution demands the death penalty, labeling it a 'rarest of rare' case.

The Rouse Avenue court, on Friday, reserved its order on the sentencing of former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar, convicted for his role in the 1984 Anti-Sikh Riots. The victims' families are advocating for capital punishment following Kumar's conviction on February 12 for the murder of a father-son duo on November 1, 1984, in the Saraswati Vihar area.

Special Judge Kaveri Baweja scheduled the sentencing for February 25 at 2 PM. H S Phoolka, the senior counsel for the victims, appeared online to present his written submissions advocating for the death penalty. The defense, led by Anil Kumar Sharma, was also present online, owing to an ongoing strike, and has been instructed to submit their written arguments within two days.

Previously, on February 17, the prosecution, led by Additional Public Prosecutor Manish Rawat, argued for the death penalty, citing precedent in the Nirbhaya case and describing the incident as 'rarest of rare', with the attack targeting a community without provocation, disrupting societal harmony. The judicial outcome hinges on these deliberations.
