In an unprecedented move, Western Coalfields Ltd (WCL), a subsidiary of Coal India, entered the arena of commercial coal block auctions, marking a significant departure from its usual operations. The company is vying for two crucial non-coking coal blocks in Maharashtra—Bandhak West and Dahegaon Makardhokra IV.
According to Jai Prakash Dwivedi, Chairman and Managing Director of WCL, both of these strategically located blocks are near the company's existing projects, ensuring seamless integration with existing operations should the bids succeed. Infrastructure is already set up, which would significantly reduce capital expenditure.
The Bandhak West block emerged as a popular choice, attracting 15 bids, the highest in the current auction. Meanwhile, the Dahegaon Makardhokra IV block garnered three bids. As technical evaluation progresses, the coal ministry is poised to announce final results within a month. Despite challenges, WCL anticipates stable production levels, turning towards securing new reserves to counteract dwindling current supplies.
